Travertine Furniture FAQ

What is travertine and where does it come from?

Travertine is a natural sedimentary stone formed by mineral-rich spring and river waters over thousands of years. The result is a stone with a distinctly warm, earthy character — creamy beige, walnut, and ivory tones with a naturally textured, slightly porous surface. The finest travertine is quarried in Italy, particularly in the Tivoli region near Rome, and Turkey, with each source producing subtly different tonal characteristics. Italian travertine tends toward lighter, creamier tones with refined veining, while Turkish travertine is often richer and deeper in colour with bolder patterning.

What is the difference between travertine and marble?

Both are natural stones but they have very different aesthetics and surface qualities. Marble such as Carrara or Calacatta typically has a smooth, polished finish with bold veining on a white or dark background, giving it a more formal, high-contrast look. Travertine has a warmer, more organic character with earthy tones and a naturally textured surface that can range from filled and honed to open and porous. Travertine tends to suit interiors that lean toward natural materials, warm neutrals, and relaxed luxury.. think Japandi, organic modern, or Mediterranean-influenced spaces while marble suits more dramatic or classic interior schemes.

Can travertine furniture be used outdoors?

Some of our travertine pieces are suitable for covered outdoor areas such as verandahs, sheltered terraces, and undercover entertaining spaces. We do have a dedicated travertine outdoor dining table in our range. However, we don't recommend placing travertine furniture in fully exposed outdoor environments where it will be subject to prolonged rain, frost, or direct sun, these conditions can affect the surface and sealant over time. If you're unsure whether a specific piece is suitable for your outdoor setup, contact us before purchasing.

What historical wonders were constructed using travertine?

Travertine, with its rich history, has graced some of the world's most iconic architectural marvels. From the grandeur of the Colosseum in Rome to the mystical terraces of Pamukkale in Turkey, travertine has played a vital role in shaping our heritage.
