Materials & Finishes

Onyx is a semi-precious silicate mineral formed over thousands of years by the slow crystallisation of silica-rich groundwater moving through cave systems and limestone cavities. The characteristic banding the layers of amber, honey, and cream visible across the Zenga's surface formed as mineral composition shifted during each depositional cycle. Unlike the fractured, irregular veining in marble, onyx banding is rhythmic and directional, which gives it a more geometric, almost architectural quality when viewed across a large slab.

The most distinctive property of caramel onyx and one shared by very few natural stones is its translucency. Light does not simply reflect off the surface; it penetrates the stone to a depth of several millimetres before returning, giving the material a luminous, internally lit quality that changes with the light conditions in the room. Under natural daylight the warm amber tones come forward. Under artificial or lamp light the depth and contrast in the veining becomes more pronounced. In backlit applications onyx glows entirely. For a coffee table at the scale of the Zenga, this translucency is most noticeable in evening and low-light settings.

The caramel colouration is produced by iron oxide and organic mineral deposits present during the stone's formation. The tone is natural and permanent not dyed, treated, or applied. Variation in depth of colour and intensity of veining across the surface is inherent to the material; no two slabs are identical.

The Zenga is a large-format square coffee table cut from semi-precious caramel onyx one of the most visually distinctive stones available in natural stone furniture. The warm amber and honey tones shift in character across the surface, divided by bold dark veining that gives each slab a quality closer to abstract painting than conventional stone.

At 1350 × 1350mm, the Zenga commands a room. The scale is deliberate — this is a centrepiece piece, not a background detail. The square format keeps the footprint balanced and works particularly well in larger living rooms and open-plan spaces where a smaller table would be lost.
