These are not faults and are inherit within the stone which stems from the time the block is extracted from the mountains in the quarry it comes from. This is a grand Carrara marble fireplace mantel in the High Victorian tradition 2000mm wide, 1230mm tall, with a pointed arch opening framed by two pilasters topped with fully carved Corinthian-style capitals. Each capital is densely worked with acanthus leaves, floral rosettes and scrolling foliage the kind of carving that takes a skilled mason days to complete on a single capital alone.
Running along the frieze and arch surround is a continuous band of repeating decorative motifs — a detail that separates this piece from simpler Victorian mantels and places it firmly in the tradition of the grand Victorian drawing room. The recessed panels on each jamb are bordered with their own ornate carved edging, maintaining the carving density across the entire face of the piece.
The stone is Carrara marble — quarried in the Apuan Alps in Tuscany, the same stone Michelangelo used for the David. Its bright white base and fine grey veining provide the ideal backdrop for carving of this complexity — the white reads clearly against the shadowed depths of the carved detail.
At 2000mm wide this is a large-format mantel suited to substantial fireplace openings in formal living rooms, drawing rooms, dining rooms, and heritage properties where the fireplace is the room's primary architectural feature.
